Join textile artist Sophie for a workshop exploring the creative possibilities of natural dyes.

In this workshop, you will be introduced to the world of natural dyes and learn how to create beautiful colours from different plants and food waste found accessible to us. You will be shown how a dye bath is made, and together with Sophie, will dye a selection of silk and wool fibres that you can take home to use in future creative projects.

Sophie will also share some of her own creative process in embroidery and drawing with inks to inspire you and there will be an opportunity to have a play with some pre-dyed yarn and natural inks in the session. You will come away with an understanding for natural dye methods, your own selection of naturally dyed mini skeins suitable for embroidery, crochet or knitting, as well as an experimental sample you create alongside Sophie and the group.

This beginner friendly class is aimed to encourage you to be inspired to create freely.

MEET YOUR TUTOR

Sophie Bowen is an artist and designer maker based in Southwest England. She studied BA Drawing  at Falmouth University followed by completing a Masters in Textiles at Bath Spa University.

Sophie works with natural dyes, print and hand embroidery techniques to connect to nature and mindfulness whilst maintaining a conscience for sustainability. Drawing is at the heart of her creative practice using it as an intuitive and contemplative tool to create a sense of movement and flow. Marks made initially with brush and ink are translated through a variety of textile processes.

Connecting experientially to the creative process, Sophie allows elements of her work to emerge and unfold organically. Walking in the landscape and the study of nature’s rhythms facilitate a contemplative thinking through making approach.
