This 2-day workshop will develop your existing throwing skills and allow you to immerse yourself on the wheel.
ABOUT THE COURSE
This workshop will provide those who have completed a beginners throwing workshop or those with a good experience of throwing an ideal opportunity to brush up on essential skills and take the next step in trying new approaches to making wheel thrown forms .
You’ll have the chance to improve and focus on specific shapes as-well as learning to throw new forms and develop new techniques to further your skills on the wheel with the focus on plates, bowls and cups.
Throughout the first day you will practice clay preparation and measuring, throwing classic forms such as cups, bowls, plates, then moving on to specific forms of your choice , for example - plates with rims, deep plates, side plates, large and small bowls, tumblers, cups with handles and any variation of these forms. Important techniques such as throwing to specific measurements for repeat shapes will be demonstrated alongside ways to use specific tools to help in throwing and finishing forms on the wheel.
There will be step-by-step instructions, demos, sharing of ideas, as well as continual guidance and tuition throughout. The beginning stages of throwing each shape will be broken down to further understanding the motions and stages needed to get a finished plate, bowl or platter or anything between. There will be a focus on measuring clay, creating the most efficient forms on the wheel with correct technique and tools.
On the second day trimming will be the focus - with further demonstrations and ideas for tools and techniques to trim carefully and successfully . students can refine and trim their pots on the wheel and trim to create a foot or realise the shape they want. At the end of the 2 days we should all have a finished selection of plates, cups and bowls.
MEET THE TUTOR
Ed is a ceramic artist currently working from a studio in Stroud. Ed graduated with a BA in Fine Art from University College Falmouth, 2014. His practice has evolved through painting into clay sculpture, ceramics and aspects of studio pottery, with wheel thrown forms, plates and painterly glaze application being a major focus. He has previously worked in a porcelain dinnerware company and apprenticed to a very well-established potter who specialised in handmade restaurant-ware and studio pottery . In these roles he gained a lot of experience in the material properties of clay and glaze , throwing, kiln firing and running studios.
