Come and connect with nature in this drawing and ink making workshop where you will learn how to create beautiful colours from plants and food waste.

In this workshop, artist Sophie will introduce sourcing and identifying dye plants and materials. She will demonstrate a variety of methods and techniques to create inks. You will learn ways of modifying and transforming colours with different metals, acids and alkali, providing you with knowledge for endless experimenting and refining.

Sophie will share with you some of her own creative process in drawing and stitch and together you will explore mark-making techniques and do some botanical drawing from plants. These exercises will help you slow down and tap into a sense of mindfulness, allowing you space to get inspired. By the end of the class, you will come away with your own homemade natural ink, some colour swatch samples, and your drawing and stitch experiments.

MEET YOUR TUTOR

Sophie Bowen is an artist and designer maker based in Southwest England. She studied BA Drawing  at Falmouth University followed by completing a Masters in Textiles at Bath Spa University.

Sophie works with natural dyes, print and hand embroidery techniques to connect to nature and mindfulness whilst maintaining a conscience for sustainability. Drawing is at the heart of her creative practice using it as an intuitive and contemplative tool to create a sense of movement and flow. Marks made initially with brush and ink are translated through a variety of textile processes.

Connecting experientially to the creative process, Sophie allows elements of her work to emerge and unfold organically. Walking in the landscape and the study of nature’s rhythms facilitate a contemplative thinking through making approach.
