Spend a day at the wheel learning how to judge clay proportions, clay preparation and the essential steps for throwing tall shapes. This throwing workshop focuses on achieving height in thrown forms and all the necessary steps, techniques and tools needed to achieve this.

Through one-to-one teaching and demos you will learn the processes needed to make taller forms such as jugs, vases, bottles, cylinders and tall pots. You will gain confidence and understanding in the essential steps and tools needed to achieve height and shape in throwing.

The main focus is height and the shapes that can emerge from tall cylinders. Emphasis will be on clay proportions, pulling up and using tools to finish forms in various shapes . Best suited for those who are confident at centering on the wheel and more intermediate throwers.

You are welcome to bring a lidded bottle of water with you but we kindly ask that you do not bring food into the studio.

What you will need

Materials are included. Please bring an apron or wear clothes you don’t mind getting dirty. We advise that you please remove jewellery and tie hair back.

Firings

You will be able to choose one piece from the day to be fired in our electric kilns, either to bisque or up to stoneware temperature (with a transparent gloss glaze).

Please make note of this and let the tutor know. Your fired work will be ready to collect after 4 weeks and you will receive notification via email once it is ready to collect.
