This 2-day workshop will allow you to immerse into the world of natural dyes and embroidery.

ABOUT THE COURSE

The first part of this workshop will introduce you to the world of natural dyes and its creative possibilities. You’ll learn about sourcing dye plants, preparing materials and the method of making a dye bath.

In your group, you will dye a selection of mini skeins as well as some fabric that will be yours to use. Sophie will also show you how you can use a dye bath to then make your own drawing inks. In the second part of this workshop Sophie will share some of her own creative process exploring drawing with textiles and natural dyes.

Together with Sophie, you will undertake a handful of creative exercises that will explore ways of mark making with your dyed materials. These exercises are aimed to help you slow down and tap into a sense of mindfulness. They will allow you the time and space to feel creatively inspired to create some beautiful hand embroidery pieces.

MEET THE TUTOR

Sophie Bowen is an artist and designer maker based in Southwest England. She studied BA Drawing  at Falmouth University followed by completing a Masters in Textiles at Bath Spa University.

Sophie works with natural dyes, print and hand embroidery techniques to connect to nature and mindfulness whilst maintaining a conscience for sustainability. Drawing is at the heart of her creative practice using it as an intuitive and contemplative tool to create a sense of movement and flow. Marks made initially with brush and ink are translated through a variety of textile processes.

Connecting experientially to the creative process, Sophie allows elements of her work to emerge and unfold organically. Walking in the landscape and the study of nature’s rhythms facilitate a contemplative thinking through making approach.
