This two day workshop will delve in to the broad varieties of mark making on clay. Learn to slab-build with maker and tutor Jessica Thorn and create your own hand-built vessels.

ABOUT THE COURSE

Day 1. Mark Making and decorating.

You will be given demonstrations into slip decoration using porcelain slips, mono printing, drawing in clay & using found objects to make tools. In the afternoon you will create a collection of tiles to be able to test these processes out. This will allow you to build a catalogue of techniques and experiments for you to use in the future.

Day 2. Introduction to Slab building.

You will be given a demonstration into the fundamentals of slab building, and how you can use templates to build and create vessels that you have designed. You can then spend the rest of the day, creating one to two vessels combining the mark making and slab building techniques.

MEET THE TUTOR

Jessica Thorn is a maker, craftsperson and lecturer based in Bristol. Jessica works from her studio, which is part of the 45 year old Cooperative Centrespace Studios, in the heart of Bristol.

Jessica’s work shows off the marks of her making process in the brightly coloured seams of her seemingly weightless porcelain vessels. Her work is created using slabs of thinly rolled porcelain clay. Jessica works with coloured porcelain slips to decorate her pieces, using various techniques.
