Join experienced textile tutor Kathleen Murphy on this two-day workshop exploring still life through fabric and stitch.

Studying a still life composition can improve skills in observation and the treatment of pattern, colour and creative spatial awareness. In a twist to the usual approach of using paint or pencil this workshop will explore ways in which to translate the associated shapes, shadows and textures of a still life tableaux of fruit and vegetables, using fabric manipulation techniques, thread and hand stitch to produce a collection of experimental textile pieces.

The workshop aims to enhance students skills in observation and translating what they see beyond paper and paint alone. To encourage students to see further possibilities in the use of fabric and stitch as part of their creative armoury.

Meet your tutor

Ross-on-Wye based maker, Kathleen Murphy specialises in constructing with needle and thread. Working predominantly with a single needle as her tool, Kathleen uses it to draw, embellish and construct with. By combining hand stitch with found objects and repurposed materials, she creates detailed 3D pieces which can be identified by a strong sense of narrative and her use of colourful embroidery. These pieces are inspired by folk culture and a fascination with the wooded landscape.

In addition to Kathleen's making practice, she also teaches and regularly contributes to the creative programme at New Brewery Arts, Cirencester. Kathleen is the curator of an artist challenge project called A Group Gathering and can often be found working collaboratively with other makers and theatre companies.
